The lady is Bobbie Gentry, the year was 1967 and the day was today September 1st that this song “Ode to Billie Joe” was a Chart Topper.  This is a live performance from the Smothers Brothers show thanks to 2old2Rock for this video and trip back in time.  This song is about a family casually discussing  over dinner, a suicide by a local boy Billie Joe MacAllister, who jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.  The song was such a hit that in 1975 Warner Bros. made a movie “Ode to Billy Joe”, (note the different spelling) of course Hollywood being Hollywood had to put a fruit cake spin on the story and made Billy Joe into a queer.  But still, this really is a cool song.
