joseph-priestly.jpgThe element oxygen was isolated by Joseph Priestley and he called it “dephlogisticated air” and described it as “five or six times better than common air for the purpose of respiration.”  He thought that in the future it would become a fashionable luxury item.  When Priestly published his papers he was challenged by others arguing that Polish alchemist Michael Sendivogius described oxygen as early as 1604.  Priestly can breath deep, as his place in history is secure.
